My First Earthquake: A Very Special Top Secret Diary Entry.
21:13:40, 2001-01-15

There were little earthquake tremors here on Saturday! I FELT THEM! I am an earthquake survivor! This brings new purpose to my existence, i have a brand new lease on life, etc etc. I survived a little itty bitty tiny catastrophe and lived to write the diary entry!

I was in bed when it happened, as i tended to be in bed this weekend, nursing my fun new depression that I think i decided today i should give up on, but we'll see what happens. Anyway my bed went back and forth like someone was pushing on the wall and the wall was maybe a little more liquid than it actually is. It felt a little bit side-to-sidey like my bed was doing a little dance. I guess it felt like a really, really, REALLY big truck had gone by like right outside, and rumbled the building but good. Except there was no truck, and i even thought to myself, "was that an earthquake?" but then i thought i was just being gay. But as it turns out, i am straight as an arrow! I'M NO MUFFDIVER, THAT WAS A FUCKING EARTHQUAKE!

The most important part of the whole story though, is that a few weeks ago, I actually took precautions to strap my magazine bookshelf to the wall because it was kind of leaning out into the room and looked like basically at any moment it was going to fall on the cat and make her die, and every time someone entered my apartment they would be sure to mention to me that we have actual earthquakes here in sunny los angeles, so i actually went to home depot and bought some actual nylon straps and basically stapled the thing to the wall with a staple gun, it ain't pretty but it stands up straight now. And even though it was only a tremor on saturday, I can pretty much guarantee that if that stuff hadn't been stapled to my wall, it would have fallen and.. well the cat was on my bed with me so she would have been ok but it would have been messy, and it would have sucked and been loud and scary, and preventable. The reason I am even telling this story though is that it marks the VERY FIRST TIME in my ENTIRE LIFE that i adequately prepared for an event IN ADVANCE OF ITS OCCURRENCE. This is a big step for me.

Oh also, I am going to run around telling people this is my first earthquake but it's not... Delaware got them somewhat frequently, little tremors that would basically feel like big trucks. I usually slept through them. But since Delaware has never suffered an actual catastrophic earthquake and LA has, and since it's a better I Just Moved to LA story, I'm sticking with calling this My First Earthquake. It will be our little secret, you and me. k?
