I want you to read this truly uplifting open letter to all salon owners, from Hair News Magazine. It helps if you read it out loud:"Dave Has Left The Building.
A lesson in humility.
Jan. 8th 2002, hair-news.com.
Today Wendy's founder Dave Thomas passed away.
Today the senior Chairman and founder of Wendy's, Dave Thomas, passed away and our country and our culture is truly the poorer for it.
You might ask what this event has to do with hair and that is a fair question, after all Dave didn't have much of it. Still, you must admit that the news did at least make you feel sad and perhaps, you even shed a tear for this man whom you have never met, and that is the message.
You see, Dave himself was never the message of the Wendy's ads. He was the self depreciating messenger. He made you feel and understand that it was the food that was important, not Dave Thomas, and this made you want the food and adore the man.
The same is true of your salon. In this industry we are inundated with Prima Donna's who loudly proclaim, "Its all about me. Me, me, me!", and its not. Its about hair, its the hair that is important.
Remember that, when you create your salon's marketing and advertising plan. Tell your clients about hair, not yourself. If there must be a star, let it be your staff, not yourself, and certainly not your family members as one sees in so many local ads.
Consider this: Dave started with four KFC's and then built an empire worth 8 billion dollars, and he did it in all humility. Ironically, this toned down style made him the longest running ad campaign in history featuring the founder of the company. Super stardom of kindness and warmth, understatement and self depreciation, humility and familiarity. Dave Thomas is truly the Biggie Man.
May God grant him rest and peace and console his family and friends, and may we remember his legacy, and be better people for it."
