Live Clothed Mars
13:10:53, 2000-02-04

So.. this whole internet thing.

Yesterday Mars IMed me and told me to load up a page, and when i did, it was a 5 or 10 second live feed of her holding up an "I heart U" sign at her coworker's desk, and it sort of got me in the gut, and I wasn't really prepared to be gotten in the gut. I just kept hitting reload, and there she was, doing something different than she'd been doing 10 seconds ago, smiling her little mars smile, tucking her mars hair behind her mars ear... It was strange. I was trying to figure out why it hit so hard, and I guess it has to do with the fact that while I've seen the sites of friends, and I've seen the live cams of strangers, seeing a live (moving) cam of my very best friend in the entire world, smiling right at me as if she could see me was something that had never ever happened before. I could know that right at that moment, 300 odd miles away, she was sitting right there holding that exact sign, moving around with her muscles, her hair just a little bit longer than it was the last time I saw her. And it really took me a few cycles to figure out that it hadn't happened before. Things move so fast now, something new to see out there every day, some new way of doing things, some old thing enabled in a new way, that nothing's surprising anymore. A live moving image isn't surprising, and my best friend on the internet is not surprising, but a live moving image of my best friend on the internet just massages my heart. I love her very, very much.
